Alma Cocina: Upscale Latin in Downtown ATL

Posted by

I love it when a plan comes together. I attended the Speakeasy Cocktail Festival back in September. It was pretty dreadful (and that’s coming from someone who had free passes). After sampling a bunch of liquor at the cocktail festival, we planned on having a leisurely dinner downtown. I thought why not take advantage of being downtown and finally visit Alma Cocina?

A short walk from many of the downtown hot spots, including our location, the GA World Congress Center, the atmosphere in Alma is dim and cozy. Our group of four (we started out as three but picked up a friendly dude who offered to share his Cubans Dominican cigars with us. Our server, Tiffany, was pleasant, knowledgeable and incredibly friendly. She didn’t even flinch when we told her we had our fare share of booze and were planning on hydrating ourselves during dinner.

The menu is divided into categories of appetizers, ceviches, soups / salads, plates, taquitos, Huaraches, sides, desserts. In a mood for sharing, we settled on the Guacamole, Tuna Ceviche and Lamb Ribs. The Guacamole was a hearty portion for me and the three men joining me. The Lamb ribs were equally hearty with lots of flavorful meat.

We flirted with the idea of ordering plates, but in the end were more intrigued with the Huaraches – crisp corn masas with different toppings. We ordered the goat and shrimp. The goat, the clear winner among everyone at the table, was extremely tender. The shrimp, which was tasty as well was a nice contrast in flavor with a bit of sweetness to it. The addition of potatoes and green beans rounded out our meal nicely.

Given that this was the same weekend as Dragoncon, we definitely had some entertainment walking around the downtown area. In honor of this auspicious weekend, Alma Cocina Chef, Jeffrey, was serving Veal Brains. Sadly, we were too full to partake in that. I am very much looking forward to my next visit to Alma Cocina and definitely want to try the cocktails.
