Best Mojitos in Atlanta + A Recipe for National Mojito Day

National Mojito Day is July 11. Here’s a list of places to get a damn good Mojito + a recipe.

Origin of the Mojito: The mojito as we know it today, was originally named after Sir Francis Drake, who spend a considerable amount of time in the Caribbean. The drink, or “Draque” as it was called, was popular with the working folk of the Caribbean and surfaced in the US as the “Mojito”.

Relatively new to Atlanta, Bartaco is a sister restaurant to Barcelona Wine Bar, located in Inman Park the we hear they juice all the limes to order. You can even order it by the pitcher.

The last place I would expect to find a good drink would be a movie theater. However, Cinebistro in Brookhaven not only has incredible cocktails but food too. And yes, their mojitos are delicious!

As an alternative to a regular Mojito, they have a Watermelon Mojito on their menu which is quite tasty.

Whether you are in town or at the airport you can get a delicious Mojito as The Original El Taco now has two locations. The frozen mojito is a must when you visit.

Located in the heart of Midtown, Zocalo has a lovely patio, perfect for summer evenings. Sipping on one of their mojitos is the perfect compliment to their delicious Mexican fare.

Mojito Recipe:

6 ounces light rum
12 mint sprigs, or spearmint, 8 roughly broken apart
6 tablespoons fresh lime juice
4 tablespoons sugar
Club soda
4 slices lime

Place ice in beverage shaker then add in the rum, 8 broken up mint sprigs, lime juice and sugar. Shake well and serve over ice in a high ball glass. Top off each glass with a splash of club soda.

Some alternatives:
There are some who like to replace the sugar with 2 teaspoons simple syrup. Make it by bringing a cup of Demerara sugar or “Sugar in the Raw” to a gentle boil with 1/2 cup water. Make sure to keep refrigerated. Another change? Add a tablespoon of 151-proof Demerara rum to the top.
