Goldberg’s Deli: Bagels, Brisket, Burgers and More!

Posted by

Goldberg’s Bagel and Deli has been in Atlanta since 1972. Since that time, they’ve expanded to several locations, including one in the Atlanta Airport.

On a recent menu tasting, I was surprised to learn about the many other menu items they offer other than bagels.

Have you ever heard of celery soda? I hadn’t either. Apparently it is quite popular in delis up north. I had to give it a try and I loved it. The slight bite to it was fabulous. But let’s get back to the food. First up was the soup: Matzoh Ball and Gazpacho. Chicken noodle soup when you are sick? Hogwash! It’s the Matzoh Ball soup; many loyal patrons swear by this cold remedy. And the Gazpacho – whoa – this cold refreshing soup had just the amount of kick to it and the dollop of sour cream was perfect. Hurry if you want to try it as it is a summer only special.

A sampling of salads: Tuna, Chicken and Egg plus Smoked Fish assortment  had us all quite satiated! To my surprise it was the chicken salad that I had to get seconds of. The quality of the smoked salmon was incredible, but again I was surprised to favor the Sable (a white fish with a slightly fat, almost buttery taste) much better.

Chicken liver fan? Yep, they’ve got that too. Brisket? Mmm…get yourself a brisket sandwich piled high on Challah. But I was saving what little room was left in my stomach for these reubens I’d heard so much about.

We sampled three reubens in total: Turkey, Corned Beef and Pastrami. Goldberg’s told us they get both their fish and meats for reubens flown in from New York. It was hard to pick a favorite but the Brooklyn (Corned Beef) and California (Pastrami) nearly neck and neck were outstanding. Don’t forget they do burgers too. I really enjoyed the cheeseburger made with ground sirloin, but the chicken and waffle was a little bland for me. I know chicken and waffles have been an ongoing craze, but Goldberg’s would be better off to steer clear, concentrating on their deli specialties, but if they are going to do it, they should offer syrup.

What’s a visit to a bagel shop without a lesson in bagel making right? Lucky for us, Goldberg’s owner Howard, was kind enough to show us their process. They must have it down to a science with this location (Buckhead) producing more than 54,000 bagels per week.

As if all of the menu items we sampled wasn’t enough, we found out that Goldberg’s Deli also has pre-made frozen meals that you can grab and go. Choose from items like Lasagna, Chicken Pot Pie, Chicken Tetrazzini, and Shrimp n Grits. Just heat in your oven for 45 minutes. I’ve already devoured the Chicken Tetrazzini Goldberg’s sent me home with!
