If you’re looking for something to do on a first date, Martinis and Imax at Fernbank is it. Martinis and Imax provides a beautiful setting, with music playing in the background – very romantic. Imax makes a great group activity too. Now, having said all of that, I’ll now contradict myself by telling you about the cons.
First of all – the parking situation. They let people go there just to hang out, so the people who actually have tickets to the movie are forced to drive around forever looking for a spot. And there isn’t any parking besides the two lots they have which makes it difficult to accomadate all the extra people that aren’t there to see a movie. So, if you are going with a group try and take one car if possible.
Second – the Food. I’ve never actually eaten it, but from looking at it can tell its overpriced for what it is. Sandwiches and burgers are around $10 and meals are around $15. If you must eat there, their specialty pizzas are around $20 (probably your best deal because it looks like they feed about 4 people). Have a look at the menu below (click on it to enlarge so you can actually read it).
After having been there more times than I can count my recommendation is, plan on eating afterward. Have a drink and get a buzz going while you are watching the movie – it makes the experience that much more fun. After wards, go to one of the nearby restaurants on Ponce or head to the Highlands. I’ll warn you, more times than not, they have been stingy with their pours, which is disappointing at $10 per martini. So, I mostly just stick with beer now. Although on my most recent visit, I was very pleased with my vodka gimlet.
**Update for 2010**
Guess they heard about the recession and dropped ticket prices a couple bucks. It was $15 for a while last year and now $12. Still a little excessive for a 40 minute film. As if that isn’t bad enough, they now make you climb up the stairs (yes, after you’ve been drinking you must now walk back up that spiral staircase) and wait in the roped off area 15 minutes prior to the start of the film.
The bottom line is I think there parking situation is a horrid mess, the ticket prices are too high and drinks are not strong enough. So why do I continue to go there? Well, as far as Atlanta nightlife goes, it is still a pretty unique event. And it is a fun experience to go and walk around the huge dinosaur bones, while sipping on a cocktail and listening to some decent music.
