As you might be able to tell by now, when it comes to food, I don’t discriminate. Meats carbs, dairy, vegetables, sweets – they’re all family to me. That’s why when it comes to vegetarianism/veganism, I’ve always admired but never adhered to the food restrictions that come with these lifestyles. That’s because I’ve always naively assumed that life as a vegetarian or vegan equalled a life of tastebud torture.
And as much as I love being right, I also appreciate being proven wrong (but only every once in a while). Well, my visit to Dulce Vegan Bakery & Cafe in Kirkwood was once in that while. Neighborhood bias aside, (Kirkwood being my stomping grounds and all) everything about Dulce Vegan is warm, welcoming and delicious. They specialize in 100% vegan and allergy-friendly sweets and savories free of processed sugars and hydrogenated oils. Their prerogative is to provide tasty fare for any- and everyone, taking dietary needs into account.
Whether it was their lemon or cheddar & chive scones, cupcakes or savory cauliflower soup garnished with vegan cheese, chives & walnuts, every piece of food placed before me was truly delicious. Dulce Vegan’s owner and head chef hails from the culinary capital of the South – Charleston (Bias applied: Charleston being my folks’ stomping grounds). Unlike many who convert to veganism, she jumped in head first with no early stops in “Vegetarian-Ville”. For that, I applaud her commitment. It’s clear that she has an unbridled passion for this sector of sustenance.
In addition to offering sweets, sandwiches, soups, and salads, Dulce Vegan also offers coffee and tea (made with local, organic & fair-trade ingredients) and kombucha via the shop’s very own ‘Kombucha Keg’. I have it on good authority that they are incorporating kombucha mocktails into their menu as well. Neat, eh?!
At the very least, I recommend checking this place out for its refined focus and originality. At the most, I recommend visiting often to sample new items from their rotating menu, explore their unique kombucha mocktails and peruse the local art they curate, display and sell.
